Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Lived Experience in ReseARch Network (LEARN)!

About The Matilda Centre...
The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use was established in December 2018 at The University of Sydney. The Matilda Centre is a multidisciplinary research centre of leading researchers and clinicians who are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of people affected by mental health and substance use conditions.

It is important to us that our research addresses the real needs of people who have experienced mental health and/or substance use conditions. To do this, we have created a database of people with first-hand lived experience of these conditions, like you, so that research can be conducted in partnership with people who have expertise and relevant lived experiences.

Being part of the LEARN will involve...
Being contacted by the Group for Lived Experience Engagement (GLEE - the team that runs LEARN) about your possible input in a research project. You can choose which projects you want to be involved in. Examples of possible tasks for research projects may include: attending meetings, providing input research activities, giving your feedback on resources, or helping to promote research within the community.

In most cases you will be paid for your time and experience (in line with NSW Mental Health Commission guidelines and The University of Sydney payrates). But, there will also be opportunities for voluntary/unpaid roles in some instances where payment is not possible because a project is unfunded. The amount of time you spend on a research project may vary between each project, but will always be outlined in the role description.

About the LEARN database…
The LEARN database has been set up by the Matilda Centre, as a central portal for collecting and storing the names and contact details of people with lived experience over the age of 18, who wish to contribute to or inform aspects of the design and/or implementation of research we do. The database is stored on a secure server which is managed by The University of Sydney and is password protected. Your identity and information will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.

By submitting this form, you are agreeing to us collecting your name and contact details for the purposes of this database. By submitting this form, you are also allowing us to use your information to contact you about your involvement in current or future research. The information we collect for the database is your name, contact details (incl. email address), and main research interests.

Over time, other information we may add to the database includes your experience of involvement in our research, your availability, and/or other requests or preferences you have when being involved in our research. Your information in the database will only be accessible to coordinators of the Group for Lived Experience Engagement (GLEE) at the Matilda Centre. You may also wish to share your details to other staff at the Matilda Centre that you are engaged with and give them permission to contact you directly.

How do you become involved with research?
You can join the LEARN database by completing the questions linked to the ‘About you’ section below. Matilda Centre researchers with current or upcoming opportunities to involve people with lived experience in their research will contact the Group for Lived Experience Expertise (GLEE) coordinators. The coordinators will send a summary of the project or opportunity to the LEARN database.

If the opportunity is of interest to you can contact the researcher/s directly to express your interest in the project or activity. In some cases we may get several or many requests to contribute to a particular project, and the researchers may have to select only one or two members of the LEARN database. You may therefore not be asked to contribute to a project that you have indicated interest in, but we hope that future opportunities will arise.

You can unsubscribe from the LEARN database at any time by emailing: matilda.glee@sydney.edu.au or clicking unsubscribe at the bottom of a GLEE email.

We take your confidentiality and information seriously at the Matilda Centre. Your data will be stored on the University’s most secure data servers, and will only be used to contact you in regards to the LEARN program.  Your information and data will not be shared within the Matilda Centre, the University or elsewhere for any other purposes (unless required by law). If you want more information, please ask for a copy of the LEARN Data Governance Principles.
